White elephants are real and they do exist other than in Alf’s mind. While your average neighborhood elephant is most likely a dusky gray (or pink, I suppose, after a few toddies), albino specimens do crop up occasionally in India, Africa and Asia. White elephants are such a rare site that they have a special status in many countries, and they generally do not lead a life of burden and toil normally endured by the average elephant. "White elephant" as a term for a burdensome or useless object comes from an almost certainly apocryphal tale about the King of Siam, the country now known as Thailand.  Legend has it that white elephants were so rare in Siam that when one was found it automatically became the property of the King, and it was a grave crime to ride, beat, neglect or kill a white elephant.

A “White Elephant Sale” (a glorified rummage or garage sale) is typical in the new year to rid closets, attics, garages and basements of unwanted odds and ends.  Someone else’s white elephant could be your treasure perhaps.    

Of course at the cabin we have no white elephant items to sell, so we will be playing for wins on the “White Elephant” pattern. Our Cabin white elephants hold a *BB & **CASH value to the winners of the most patterns weekly *BB and monthly **CASH.
